How important is nutrition with regards to the health goals of your clients?

When you become a certified personal trainer, you’ll find that the needs and aims of your client base will vary hugely. Some will be looking to get into shape for an upcoming half marathon; others will have aspirations of building their overall strength. Perhaps the biggest reason people seek out the help of personal trainers, though, is to lose weight.

According to the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW), nearly two in three Australian adults (63 per cent) are overweight or obese, and thus, losing this excess weight has become a big focus for the Aussie population. The AIHW, in a separate article, takes a look at just how food and nutrition are of such paramount importance when it comes to our health and wellbeing, especially with regards to losing weight and keeping our overall fitness goals in sight.

Only two per cent of the population actually eat the recommended two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day.

Let’s take a look at just why eating a good diet can help your clients to reach their health and fitness aspirations – and how your expertise in nutritional coaching can help make sure they reach their goals as efficiently as possible. Remember, you should point them in the direction of a certified nutritionist for more precise, bespoke dietary advice should they require it.

The weight of the nation

It’s a little-known secret that Australia is not eating as well as it could be. According to figures released by Roy Morgan Research, only two per cent of the population actually eat the recommended two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day, and there is little doubt that this is what may be contributing to the growing obesity levels in the land Down Under.

Even if people are of a healthy weight, should their diet not be up to scratch, it can spell trouble for their health as a whole. That’s because bad diet has been linked with a raft of health risks, including serious conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and even some types of cancer. If your clients instead opt for healthier food choices, as well as keep up their fitness program (under your guidance, of course!), they are in great position to fend off any health problems.
