With the 10698NAT – Diploma of Weight Management, you’ll be able to provide practical solutions for your clients to manage and maintain a healthy weight. You’ll learn how to recognise interrelated contributing factors to weight gain and develop weight management programs that include meal plans, exercise recommendations and behaviour modification techniques.

Your role as a Weight Management Specialist

The role of a Weight Management Specialist is to provide clients with advice and practical solutions for losing weight or body fat. This is achieved by:

  • applying specialised skills and knowledge in planning, conducting and evaluating advanced weight management programs
  • advising clients with exercise recommendations, lifestyle modifications, and/or behaviour modification techniques
  • providing clients with meal plans and sharing general non-medical nutrition information 
  • recognise interrelated contributing factors to weight gain to identify program needs
  • working in supervisory roles, applying their skills and knowledge to assist team members

Essential entry requirements

Entrants to the qualification must:

  • hold the 10576NAT Certificate IV in Weight Management (or its successor), or a qualification at least at AQF level 4 in a relevant field such as fitness or allied health;
  • have the ability to use computers, to email, send and write word documents and to use basic spreadsheets.
Recommended entry requirements

The following criteria may facilitate successful completion of the course.

Entrants will benefit from having:

  • all entrants – high level language, literacy and numeracy levels – sufficient to interpret research documents and medical or allied health practitioner referrals, liaise effectively with a range of healthcare professionals, prepare written reports (including referrals) and prepare a weight management plan including numeracy requirements for weights, measures and times.
  • international students – a score of 5.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to ensure they have the capacity to understand and organisational policies and procedures and legislative requirements and can interact with a range of clients.
Limitations to entry
  • Students seeking entry to this course may be subject to an interview process to determine their suitability for providing support services to weight management clients.
  • This course exposes students to the challenge of mentoring clients who may have suffered challenging, emotionally confronting situations. It requires students to have sufficient maturity and work/life experience to provide professional support services within organisational and regulatory requirements.
